TRAIL celebrates 9 years of community service

TRAIL members, volunteers, donors, and community partners returned to the spacious and light-filled Unitarian Universalist Society in Coralville on May 21, 2026, to mark TRAIL’s 9th anniversary.

More than 100 guests enjoyed plentiful food, drink, and conversation with new friends and those of long standing.

TRAIL’s Executive Director Christine Scheetz opened the brief program with thanks to event Gold Sponsor McGrath Toyota of Iowa City; Silver Sponsors Hills Bank and StoryPoint Senior Living; and in-kind sponsors Bread Garden and Okoboji Wines. She also reviewed some recent TRAIL achievements, including fulfilling nearly 2,500 volunteer service requests in 2025!

Christine then turned the podium over to Corey Creekmur, retired UI professor of Cinema Arts, who gave a thoughtful and entertaining presentation about “Movies and Memories.” His remarks included a quiz about memorable movie quotations from the past  (“Play it again, Sam”) that clearly resonated with the TRAIL audience.

The event wrapped up with further remarks from Christine about TRAIL’s current strategic plan and its three central pillars: Member and Volunteer Experience, Community Education and Advocacy, and Sustainability and Infrastructure. She also unveiled an expanded mission statement:

TRAIL is powered by volunteers to help older adults live and age with support, safety, and connection in the places they call home by providing tools and resources for active independent living.”

It’s a mission TRAIL pledges to fulfill as it prepares for its 10th anniversary in 2027.
